Equal Pay?

I found a comment that sums it all up:
https://www.isidewith.com/poll/935311236/stance/1026385547
I think that people should get paid based on their level of professionalism, how educated they are, how well they can perform their tasks and so on. I don't think you should be paid equal just because you are a woman. What if the woman does not do the task as well as the man, it would only be fair to pay the man more. I understand, as a female myself, I would like to get paid for the job but, I would like to get paid based on how well I do my job and not just because of my gender. If for example: there are two students a male and a female in a class, would you give both of them the same grade even though the male deserved an A and the female deserved a B?

Women tend to choose lower paying jobs and jobs that have a role as a caregiver, while men are a lot more business oriented. Most  high paying jobs such as lawyers, doctors and CEO's are done by men. Men tend to be better at negotiating. Men typically negotiate for a higher salary and better benefits. Women do not typically go out of their way to get the highest salary possible. Women's brains do not work like that.

There are also a lot of successful women out there who have pushed past these boundaries. They have taken on a role that is more than just a caregiver. Take Beyonce for instance, she is one of the most influential females in the world and I don't think she is having any financial trouble. It all depends on the path you set yourself on. Of course there will be employers who pay unfairly and that is a problem.  John F. Kennedy Signed the Equal Pay Act in 1963, which states that it is illegal to pay different salaries to men and women for the same job. Yet, It is still such a huge problem 53 years later. https://www.eeoc.gov/laws/statutes/epa.cfm This is a link from the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commision that goes really into depth about the Equal Pay Act.Yes, If the female and male are doing the same job equally as well, they should be paid equally. This issue is a mess, because I understand both sides and also I, myself am stuck in the middle. I agree and disagree with some points made on both sides of the issue. Also, I do not know enough about this issue to really have a very strong opinion, or lean to one side too much.
If you work hard and dream big, you will make all the money you need and want!

  1. I found this post really interesting. If the issue was one of quality work, then it wouldn't be an equality issue, would it? I think you can really expand this text by looking at the data on those in the same jobs with the same quality output. You'll find that there is inherent bias in hiring, salary, and timelines of raises and promotions specifically related to gender...
I like that you admit you have room to learn more. See what you can do to build this post!

  2. Ten points for the Nicki Gif! I understand what you're saying here, merit should be of the up most importance when it comes to the workforce however; it seems there are some aspects of this issue that you may be neglecting. You mention that "
Women tend to choose lower paying jobs and jobs that have a role as a caregiver, while men are a lot more business oriented.", my initial reaction was to argue this and even to be a tiny bit offended but if this is true, it may strengthen your argument to support this claim with some empirical data. I know that in the 1950s women tended to stay more in the domestic sphere but what about today in 2016. You state Beyonce as an exception to the house wife rule but she's a bit of a special case. Why not consider the many women we hear about int he news who are freezing their eggs in order to postpone starting their own families so that they can focus on their career. Lets get the data on their jobs, I am sure they are impressive. Finally your closing statement is that if you work hard and chase your dreams everything will work out, and while this is lovely to think about it may be idealistic. This cite http://www.aauw.org/research/the-simple-truth-about-the-gender-pay-gap/ shows data from a 2014 census and shows the pay rates for men and women in every state in the United States, notice how there is no state wherein Men and Women are equal or when Women Make more than Men. It can't be possible that in every state in the United States on average men are always more qualified than women. Which would mean something systematic is going down. Dr. Quinn mentioned discrimination in the hiring process, I know there have been social experiments where individuals with exotic sounding names alter their names on their application and receive more hits back on their applications than they had using their given names. The cite I listed shows the disparity not only between genders but also between races. By considering these other factions of this multifaceted issue, you can strengthen your argument even more!
